Construction & Remodeling Project Recycling

Most cities require – or strongly encourage – contractors and homeowners to minimize the amount of construction and demolition material being sent to the landfill. In response to state regulations, many communities are implementing ordinances that require many construction and remodeling projects to submit and implement recycling plans, and to report the amount of materials disposed of and recycled.

What is “Clean” Construction Waste?

When potentially recyclable waste materials are separated from “contaminating” debris, the recyclable material is considered clean. For instance: rebar is a contaminant when recycling concrete; metal flashing and roof tiles are contaminants when separating wood waste for recycling; asphalt is a contaminant to concrete, and vice-versa.

Clean construction waste is taken to a recycling facility, where processing fees are often less than landfill costs. Mixed waste material (construction waste collected together with rubbish and/or contaminants) is either hauled to a landfill, or is taken to a waste transfer facility to be sorted.
